Balance and Harmony: The Creation of a Sand Mandala

12 Aug to 02 Sep

Opening Ceremony

Saturday 12th August, 10.30am:

This will include a welcome by local iwi and Christchurch City Libraries. Monks then perform a brief consecration ceremony and pour the first grains. You can watch the initial progress on the mandala any time on Saturday until 4.00 pm, and then drop in any time between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm until the closing ceremony on Saturday 2nd September.

Tibetan monks will be constructing a sacred cosmogram grain by grain with crushed marble coloured sand, representing a world in perfect harmony. Over three weeks in the Te Hāpua: Halswell Centre there will be a rare opportunity to witness the creation of a delicate and fragile work rich in symbolism and the expression of good will.

After completion it is ceremoniously destroyed as a valuable reminder of the impermanence of all things. This ancient art form was an integral part of Indian Tantric Buddhism, which is now, almost exclusively practiced by Tibetan lineages.
