Founded in 1958, the Canterbury Film Society is a member of the NZ Federation of Film Society. It offers festival-quality cinematic experiences such as classics, arthouse rarities, international gems and documentaries, local cinema and shorts – including some distinguished and innovative films never released commercially or shown on NZ television.
The 2017 theme uses groups of films linked to people, places or style. The 2017 27-film season runs on Mondays from 6 March to 9 October (except public holidays and Mondays that coincide with the NZ International Film Festival) with screenings at 7:30pm.
The Art Christchurch Gallery is a generous contemporary space and CFS members enjoy meeting before films for a glass of mulled wine, beer, home-baked food and a chat with other film lovers. Doors open at 7pm and membership can be purchased via the website or on the night.
New members are always warmly welcome. An annual membership runs for 12 months from the date of joining and, at $132, works out at less than $5 per film; tertiary and secondary student membership is only $70. Or, buy a three-film $30 Flexi-Pass membership that has no expiry date. Use it on three separate occasions or invite two friends to come to the film of your choice.
For more information on the 2017 CFS film schedule, visit the website for a downloadable copy, or visit the CFS FaceBook page. Membership enquiries to Membership Secretary Michelle on 021 157-6605.
