Tā moko: Traditional Maori Tattoo Demonstration

Sunday 02 Apr

‘Taia o moko, hai hoa matenga mou.’

Of your moko, you cannot be deprived. Except by death. It will be your ornament, and your companion, until your last day.

Artist Chris Harvey demonstrates the art of traditional moko (tattoo). Moko designs tell a story of who you are, your ancestry and tribal lineage (whakapapa).

Chris will explain the connections between nature, perseverance and survival that is present in moko patterns and designs.

Chris has practised the art of tā moko for 20 years and is one of very few practising female artists. She uses modern equipment as well as uhi (tools) that she makes using albatross bone fashioned into teeth that are then tapped into the skin.
